How dance sequences are constructed in music videos.

How dance sequences are constructed in music videos.

Sia, Chandelier.

·     Minimalist clothing
·     Lots of use of shadows
·     Panning / tracking shots to follow the dancer
·     Match in action, allows the music video to move and be edited in a way that doesn’t confuse the audience and allows it to run steadily instead of jumping around in the sequence.
·     Close ups when safe, shows the dancers emotion, allows to encode feelings into the music video.
·     High use of rule of thirds, dancer is either on the left, middle or right, adds a sense of structure to the routine
·     Slow edit
·     Double framing

·     Low and high angled shots when following the dancer.

Ed Sheehan, Thinking Out Loud

·     Strong single colour dominated light (red could connote danger or love)
·     Hard lighting, casting lots of shadows
·     Spotlights
·     Slow edit
·     Lots of panning shots to follow dancers around the room
·     More use of mid and long shots
·     Mixture of high and low angle
·     Lighting used to cast patterns / objects. Used to create a heart around the two dancers, encoded to further reinforce  to the audience the music video is about love
·     Clothing mainly one block colour, so not to distract from the dance sequence.

Michael Jackson, Thriller

·     Dance sequence built into the narrative
·     Mainly mid to long shots
·     Hard lighting, casts shadows
·     Panning shot to follow dance sequence as characters move down the street
·     Low angle when he turns into a ‘zombie’ and joining the herd, they are dominating and powerful
·     Michael in red, main character, stands out when dancing with others, attention drawn to him.

Results.

From the answers to this question I feel that the rest of the answers to the other questions will have more face validity and will better influence the making of my music video as I originally aimed to make a music video of a target audience of young adults which my sample is (15-25 years old) and this also means that I have a greater understanding of what my target audience wants from a music video.

From these results I can see that the song Laughter Lines from Bastille would be more appropriate as the other songs fall into more of an indie genre or pop genre where as Laughter Lines contains a mix of both. This means that my music video will appeal to a wider audience as it contains something for everyone that everyone can gain the gratification of entertainment from. I think that the reason as to why more people chose indie pop is due to the fact to contains something for everyone as it turns the two genres into a hybrid offering more appeal to a wider amount of audience.

When looking at these results I can see that my target audience would prefer a music video that contained a narrative so this means that when it comes to me creating my music video I will add some sort of story line for the audience to follow. Although less people wanted a performance / experimental music video I am still going to include these as I feel experimenting with both a narrative and performance music video will be more affective and will therefore reach a wider audience rather than just my primary audience. I also want to combine these as it will mean that I can use a wider range of shot types and experiment more with lighting to make the music video more effective.

Here I can tell that the audience would prefer if the music video’s visuals matched the lyrics being played on screen rather than contradicting them. This I will try to do by either illustrating the lyrics or amplifying the lyrics as this will fit into Andrew Goodwin’s theory. I will attempt to do this by showing things like a close up of someone’s laughter lines when the lyrics say ‘Laughter lines’ in Bastille’s song for instance

From these results I can see that almost 95% of people (93.33%) would prefer a blend of different music video genres which will therefore increase the gratification of entertainment. However, after looking at the results from question 3 I already plan to combines difference music videos genres which will offer a higher gratification of entertainment for the target audience. I feel that the results I collected for this question have been answered this way as it allows for different audiences to engage with the music video as they feel that there is something in it that they enjoy and everyone feels the same.

From these results I can clearly see that majority of people would like to see the  song Laughter Lines by Bastille turned into a music video so this will be the song I choose to turn into a music video in order to target my main audience. I think that the reason to this is due to the fact it falls into the indie-pop genre and therefore all audiences can enjoy it and feel as though they can relate to the music without it being solely dedicated to being one specific genre.

Long answer analysis, question 6.
-      Twenty-one pilots, trees, why? ‘The song resanates with me and I would love to have a music video so I can cherish it audio wise and visually’
-      Bastille, Laughter Lines, why? ‘they usually do good music videos’
-      None of these, why? ‘don’t listen to any of the songs’
Shortened answers
-      Cherish visual version
-      Good videos

-      Don’t listen to

When looking at these results I can clearly see that most people aren’t too bother if the music video contains the artists at 2 thirds of the people asked answered no. This will help in making the production of my music video easier as I won’t have to worry about finding someone to star as the artist and can focus more on the narrative and the performance that will be contained in the music video.

In these results more people would prefer slow editing, but this is also closely followed by the number of people that would prefer a mix of both slow and faced paced editing so instead of including only slow editing I will try and also include fast paced to add a better variety to the music video and to keep the audiences interest. I feel that this would also be effective as it will help maintain the audience’s attention.

From these results the target audience said that they would prefer if the music video had a meaning that was open to interpretation, this I will try to do instead of encoding a clear meaning, but this may also be hard to do but will try my hardest to let the audience decode their of feelings and ideas from the music video.

Here I can also see that 2 thirds of people gain a deeper meaning from the song ‘laughter lines’ by Bastille and will therefore use this song for my music video as it means that more people can apply their own meaning and will want to watch the music video to compare the meaning they got from the song vs the music video. This may also lead to the target audience gaining the gratification of social integration as they may talk to other about the meaning they gained.

Long answer analysis question 10.
-      Twenty-one pilots, trees, why? ‘they write deep and meaningful music, but Trees hits deeper than other songs by them, especially due to the slow tune with the song that then gets faster and more upbeat which I personally like’
-      Bastille, Laughter Lines, why? Lyrics are meaningful and the violin that comes in during the chorus adds emotion to the song’
-      None of these, why? ‘don’t listen to any of the songs but also don’t like twenty-one pilots’

Shortened answers
-      Meaningful
-      Gets faster
-      Instruments add emotion
-      Don’t like twenty-one pilots

Evaluation.

A positive of my questionnaire is that I was able to ask a range of questions that will help guide and influence the making of my music video. I was able to ask the target audience what type of music video genre they prefer, how they like music videos edited etc, that will allow me to make a music video that will appeal to the target audience and allows them to further engage with the music video. The fact that I sent this questionnaire to participants of my target age range (18 – 25-year olds) this improves the predictive validity ‘this is the degree to which a test accurately predicts a criterion that will occur in the future’ therefore if I was to give this to people of a similar age range the results should come up similar due to the fact that its my aimed age range.

However, a disadvantage of my questionnaire may be the fact that I didn’t include an introduction or a small brief as to what the questionnaire was about. This may mean that participants didn’t put as much thought or detail into the questions where they could expand on why they wanted something as they may feel that their opinion isn’t as valued as they aren’t even told why they are answering the questionnaire. This may slightly decrease face validity of the research as it may not measure what it supposed to do due to participants not really caring or giving thought to the answers they are giving.

When looking at the graphs produced from analysing the answers given they help to improve the face validity of my questionnaire as questions that may have similar answers such as question 6 (Which song would you prefer to be turned into a music video, space will be provided if you wish to say why. (Tick one)) and question 10 (Which song do you feel you gain a deeper meaning from, space will be provided if you wish to say why. (Tick one)) the graphs show similar results such as the answer ‘Bastille, Laughter Lines’ being the most popular answer and the other options being given as an answer were shown to be significantly less popular in comparison. This improves the face validity of my questionnaire as it shown that the questions tests what it originally aimed to test (peoples opinion on what they would like in a music video).

Another advantage of my questionnaire is the fact that I was able to easily turn the majority of the results into graphical form which made it easier for analysing what people wanted from a music video. For example, the graphs clearly show that most people would like it if the music video has a message that was open to interpretation which I will then be able to incorporate into the making of my music video. This is also an advantage as it meant that even if someone was unsure of what the questionnaire was set out to test they can clearly see and analyse the results for themselves and gain an understanding of what my music video is aiming to achieve.
